Food Ingredients

Let’s talk food ingredients!

They are the most vital part of a recipe, don't you think? What happens when you see a great recipe somewhere you definitely want to try? Surely the needed ingredients won't come flying into your fridge or kitchen cupboard automatically. Would be handy though.

No, you take your iPhone (or pen and paper just like in the good old days) and start making a shopping list of what you need to purchase for the upcoming days:

  • fish sauce: there's a bottle of this sauce in your fridge that went into hibernating mode. You opened it 6 months ago to use it just once. It looks a bit odd. Should you still use it?
  • 1 tiny green chili pepper: bummer, your supermarket sells them only in packages of 20. Do you really have to throw away the 19 other chillies or condemn your family and yourself to a hot month of spicy food only? Or are there easier ways such as preserving the chillies instead of letting them rot away in your fridge?
  • soy sauce: one of your family members is gluten-intolerant. Is there a good substitute for soy sauce? How much should you consume? Does it contain as much salt as the average soy sauce?

Lots of questions sometimes! So the meaning behind this chapter is to give some answers by taking you on a private tour in our kitchen cupboard, pantry, fridge and freezer. We offer you a summary of the main ingredients, herbs and seasonings you will regularly come across in our recipes. We'll try to explain to you why, how and what we use. Which kind of salt should you use on a Sunday roast? What does extra-virgin olive oil mean? Is there a huge difference between white, green or pink pepper and what specifically do you use it for? What is soy sauce made of and how much of it can you consume daily? You will find all the answers right here! We also provide some extra tips and tricks concerning storage, purchase and what prices you can expect in the supermarket.

Last but not least every single food ingredient chat ends with a brief and simple summary from a medical point of view, things you might already be aware of anyway. Is salt good for you? What does olive oil to your body? Is fish sauce healthy and why (not)? All this information is purely based on our own kitchen experiences and local supermarket products which can differ from what you might think or experience. It's just a sole opinion!

Do you want more detailed information? Do you know additional tips and tricks we forgot to mention or do not know of? Maybe you disagree on something? Don't hesitate and please contact us! We are just 2 simple but very keen foodie home cooks enchanted to share our passion and love for food with you and open to embrace new knowledge about food. We would be happy to learn about food ingredients from you!
