Delicious easy dessert recipes: we hardly need to introduce this very next topic,
do we?! Desserts are by far the most beloved part of a menu. How come?
Everyone of us is born with a pair of sweet teeth. Some seem to have
more than that if you look around you… Ask a bunch of people for their
favorite dessert. You’ll mostly hear ‘something with chocolate’. Why?
Chocolate not only tastes good, it also has a positive effect on our
moods.

Desserts already exist for ages. Take a look at the food patterns in
ancient civilizations and cultures. Fruits and berries and natural
sweeteners like honey in combination with nuts were the main components.
The ancient Romans were very fond of these kinds of sugary treats.

The
Greek had a weakness for fresh yoghurt topped with for example preserved
quinces (still this dessert is a part of a Greek meal). Attention,
sweet treats not always represented a dessert the way we know dessert
now in the end of a meal.
Sugar has not always been available.
Crusades and maritime trade with other continents resulted in the import
of special products and spices. It’s only during the Middle Ages that
sugar got fully introduced in Europe. Not everyone could start cooking
with it because at that time it was highly recognized as a luxury
product like nutmeg and pepper and therefore very expensive. Only the
rich could afford such extraordinary product. Nowadays sugar is a fixed
element in every kitchen cupboard.
Where do you get your inspiration when it comes to making desserts? I bet you can count on some pretty good cookbooks like I do. I'm not an experienced dessert maker so I gladly rely on a few classics, for example the Dessert Book from the Williams-Sonoma Collection.
It’s
interesting though that every time we think of desserts we immediately
think of sweet dishes. Even the Italian call their desserts ‘dolci’
meaning sweets. Believe it or not, some of us are not that fond of it.
So how about a few hearty desserts? Anyone? Cheese of course! Both Luc and I adore a nice piece of delicious cheese to end a great meal. Our
favorite: a perfect blue cheese. Advantage: there’s no cooking involved
if you serve cheese. This means you can focus on your starters, entrees
or main course.
